There are several events that you can do for service in the month of November. For the whole month of November, the service committee is sponsoring the November Food Drive. This is really really easy service. All you have to do is collect nonperishable food items, deliver them to the Honors Office, and submit your service hours using the form. There are several more specific ways in which you could do these hours. The following list contains some ideas:
- Door to door on/off campus, asking for food donations.
- Requesting donations from supermarkets, Aramark, or other places that have lots of food (please email the service committee if you plan to do so, firstname.lastname@example.org).
- Making donation boxes, to be placed in highly trafficked areas.
- Making signs, whether digital or paper, raising awareness and requesting donations.
There are several service events planned by the Honors Office coming up as well. Volunteers are still needed for the November Open House and November Phone-a-thon. These events are a great chance to serve the Honors Program. Contact Marcy if you are interested.
Several seniors and juniors need lots of service hours, so please take advantage of all these opportunities.
If you were to peruse the US-government-kept statistics, you might be appalled at some of the figures that you see.
There is no excuse why NY ranks so low. But if you thought it was only a college student problem, you would be sorely mistaken. It's a NY problem, maybe related to that New York state of mind, maybe not.
In either case, these numbers show that as service organizations go, we can only improve.
The new service website is up and running. We believe that this system will be an upgrade for everyone! It will help keep track of hours with its centralized organization. We are still experimenting with its design, but we hope that you do indeed find the new system much more robust.
